Saffron Fine Diamond Jewellery

Diamond carat size guide.

Learn why carat weight, measurements, proportions and setting all affect how a diamond looks.

Carat measures a diamond’s weight. It is a useful starting point, but the visible size depends on more than the number on the report.

Carat weight versus visible size

One carat equals 0.2 grams. Diamonds with the same carat weight can face up differently because their shape, depth and proportions differ. Check the length and width in millimetres and view the stone in a setting similar to the one you plan to buy.

Compare proportions

A deep stone can carry more weight below the setting, while a shallower stone may spread more widely. Neither measurement alone establishes beauty; review the complete proportions and appearance. Fancy shapes also vary in length-to-width ratio, which changes their look on the finger.

Choosing a carat range for a ring

Start with the wearer’s style, ring size and the setting. A slim solitaire, halo or three-stone design can change how prominent a centre diamond appears. Ask which carat range is structurally suitable for the chosen setting. Saffron offers available carat selections within product options and can quote a custom specification when needed.

Understanding price

Price changes with origin, shape, size, quality characteristics, availability and the ring’s metal and making. Compare the full specifications of any two quotes. We can discuss alternatives within a stated budget without claiming that a carat target alone guarantees a particular look or price.
