A guide to diamond shapes.
Explore round, oval, emerald, radiant, pear, cushion and princess diamonds for your ring.
A diamond’s shape changes the personality of a ring. Compare the outline, length-to-width ratio and how the stone looks in its setting.
Round brilliant
A circular outline and brilliant-style faceting make round diamonds a classic engagement-ring choice. Compare cut quality and dimensions alongside carat weight.
Oval
An oval has an elongated outline that can look graceful on the finger. Oval stones vary noticeably in length-to-width ratio. Inspect the exact stone for any darker bow-tie area across its centre and decide whether the overall appearance pleases you.
Emerald and radiant
Emerald cuts have step-cut facets and a hall-of-mirrors character. Their open table can make inclusions easier to notice. Radiants have a rectangular or square outline with brilliant-style sparkle. Compare corner proportions and length-to-width ratio.
Pear, cushion and princess
Pears taper to a point and work beautifully in rings and pendants; consider point protection and symmetry. Cushions can be square or elongated with soft corners and varied faceting. Princess cuts have a square outline and pointed corners that benefit from a protective setting.
Shape, carat and the finished design
Two one-carat diamonds of different shapes can have different face-up dimensions. Ask for millimetre measurements and a view of the exact diamond where available. Not every setting accepts every shape or carat size without a design change. Saffron will confirm feasibility and pricing in the quote.
