How to choose an engagement ring.
A practical guide to diamond origin, shape, setting, metal, ring size and the full price of a finished ring.
An engagement ring is a set of choices that should work together: the diamond, the setting, the metal and the person who will wear it.
How to choose an engagement ring
Begin with the wearer’s style. Look at the jewellery they wear most often: delicate or bold, yellow or white metal, classic or contemporary. A solitaire gives the centre diamond room to shine. Side stones, halos and pavé bands create a different silhouette and can change how large a ring feels on the hand. Think about daily comfort, how the ring sits beside a wedding band and whether the setting can be resized later.
Natural or lab-grown diamond?
Both are diamonds, with different origins and price considerations. Decide which origin matters to you before comparing stones. Then look at shape, carat weight, measurements, cut quality, colour, clarity and any grading report offered for the exact diamond. A carat number alone does not tell you how large a diamond will look from above. Compare millimetre measurements and proportions, particularly for fancy shapes such as oval, pear and emerald.
Ask whether a pictured ring includes the exact diamond shown. On made-to-order pieces, the final stone may be selected separately and its appearance can vary. Saffron confirms the agreed stone and specifications in the quote before an order is placed.
Setting and lifestyle
Prongs expose more of the diamond and need periodic inspection. A bezel surrounds the stone with metal and creates a clean outline. A halo frames the centre with smaller diamonds. Each design changes the visual balance and maintenance needs. If the wearer is active with their hands, discuss a lower profile or more protected setting. We can explain what is practical for the diamond shape and size you choose.
Metal, colour and ring size
Choose a metal colour that suits the wearer and the jewellery they already own. The available purity and colour options depend on the design. A professional finger measurement is the best starting point for size; a wide band may fit differently from a slim band. Ask about resizing before buying, especially for eternity or intricate designs.
A useful budget conversation
Compare the complete ring price, including diamond, metal, making, taxes, any included report and delivery. A different diamond size, origin or grade may change the quote considerably. As a manufacturer, Saffron can discuss those tradeoffs directly and prepare a specification-led quote. We can review a comparable written quote and confirm whether a price match is possible; no match is automatic.
Share a reference, target carat range, metal preference and budget. We will help narrow the possibilities.
