Natural vs lab-grown diamonds.
Understand origin, appearance, grading and the choices that matter when comparing two diamonds.
Natural and lab-grown diamonds are both diamonds. Their origin is the key distinction, and it should be clearly disclosed when you buy.
How natural diamonds form
Natural diamonds form deep within the earth over geological time and are brought to the surface through natural processes. Their rarity and supply influence their market price. Individual stones still vary widely in cut, colour, clarity, carat weight and appearance.
How lab-grown diamonds are made
Lab-grown diamonds are created using technological processes that grow diamond crystal under controlled conditions. They have the same essential diamond material as natural diamonds; moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials. A lab-grown stone should be identified as such in its description and, where applicable, its grading report.
Appearance, grading and value
Origin alone does not determine how beautiful a diamond looks. Compare the exact stone’s proportions, finish, colour and clarity. A well-cut diamond can appear more lively than a larger stone with less pleasing proportions. Natural and lab-grown diamonds have different market dynamics, so avoid treating either as a guaranteed investment or assuming a resale value.
What should you choose?
Choose natural if its geological origin and rarity are central to your decision. Consider lab-grown if you prefer to explore a different balance of size and price. The right choice also depends on the design, the available stones and what you value personally. We can quote both options against the same ring design so you can compare the finished piece.
Ask for the origin, shape, carat, measurements, grades and report details of the exact diamond offered.
